About La Victoria de Acentejo

This town is often closely associated with La Matanza de Acentjo. The two towns were the sites for the battles in the 15th century between Alfonso Fernandez de Lugo and the Guanche Army.

La Matanza (the massacre) was named after over 900 Canarian men were killed after being lured by Alfonso's troops into a massacre.

One year later Alfonso returned with a stronger army and defeated the Guanches. He built a church on the site of the battle and the town which grew around it was called La Victoria (the victory)
